We'll continue to improve our dynamic blocksize (which our team pioneered initially with Cryptonote) and we're currently researching horizontal L1 scaling (sharding).

# What is Zano
Zano is an open-source cryptocurrency (layer-1) and ecosystem with enterprise-grade privacy, security, and scalability that operates as a robust foundation for confidential assets and decentralized applications (dApps). In short, people can build all kinds of privacy-focused dApps on Zano utilizing our unique features such as Confidential Assets, Escrow Contracts, Aliases, and more.
Zano is an open-source layer-1 blockchain where all transactions are private by default. Amounts, addresses, and even asset types are hidden on every transaction — enforced by the protocol, not opt-in.
On Zano everything is private by default, meaning people cant see the amount transacted, the addresses involved, and not even the asset type transacted.
You can transfer funds, earn staking rewards, issue confidential tokens, trade peer-to-peer, and build decentralized applications on Zano. No one can see what you sent, who you sent it to, or what asset was involved. All an observer sees is that a transaction happened.
As illustrated in the image below, all you can see is that a transaction happened. Transactions are verifiable for the sender/receiver through transaction IDs.
![Comparison of details revealed by ETHs transactions and Zano ones.](/img/learn/what-is-zano/transfer.png)

Transactions are verifiable by the sender and receiver through transaction IDs, but the data is never publicly exposed.
### Technologies
### Origin
Zanos lead developer Andrey Sabelnikov created the first-ever privacy coin protocol code base named CryptoNote. Today, this protocol is used by Monero and hundreds of other projects.
Zanos lead developer Andrey Sabelnikov wrote the original CryptoNote reference implementation — the codebase that Monero and hundreds of other projects forked from. Zano is his next evolution of that work, built from scratch with a wider scope: not just private payments, but a private economy.
Zano is the advanced evolution of Cryptonote, emphasizing unparalleled privacy and adopting a wide variety of technologies that can be used to create all kinds of privacy-focused decentralized applications (dApps) and other projects.
### Key Technologies
Here are they summed up:
**Zarcanum**: The worlds first Proof of Stake scheme with hidden amounts. Stakers can secure the network in complete anonymity.
**Zarcanum**: A hallmark of Zano, introducing the world's first hidden amounts Proof of Stake scheme, shaping a novel benchmark in blockchain consensus.
**Confidential Assets**: Anyone can issue privacy tokens on the Zano chain, secured by the same mechanisms as the native coin — hidden addresses and hidden amounts. Private stablecoins, shielded versions of existing assets, and more, without running your own blockchain.
**Confidential Assets**: Beyond the Zano coin, our platform enables user-creatable privacy tokens that possess all the features and functionalities of the native coin, ensuring complete transactional privacy.
**Ionic Swaps**: An improvement on atomic swaps that enables peer-to-peer asset exchange with full privacy. Neither party has an unfair advantage. This powers Zanos DEX.
**Ionic Swaps**: In Zano's ecosystem, users can smoothly trade between different crypto assets, all while maintaining the essence of privacy.
**Hybrid PoW/PoS Consensus**: Alternating Proof of Work and Proof of Stake blocks. Attacking Zano requires both hashpower and stake — no single vector is enough.
**Hybrid PoW/PoS Consensus**: By uniting the strengths of both Proof of Work and Proof of Stake processes, Zano delivers enhanced security, curbing double-spend vulnerabilities.
**Auditable Wallets**: An opt-in feature for transparent wallets where a third party would rather verify than trust. Does not affect privacy for the rest of the network.
**Auditable Wallets:** An opt-in feature that enables people and organizations to create transparent wallets for situations where we would rather verify than trust. Creating auditable wallets doesnt affect the privacy of the Zano network in any way.
**Fungibility**: No coin is tainted. No blacklists. Hidden transaction history makes every ZANO identical.
**Core Performance**: Zano's asynchronous core is a testament to computational efficiency, ensuring forward/backward compatibility and a modular approach ready for the crypto realm's challenges.
**Uncensorable**: When transactions are invisible, they cant be blocked, reversed, or selectively enforced.
Additionally, with features like the dynamic [Marketplace API](https://docs.zano.org/docs/build/marketplace/marketplace-api-guide), adaptable [Escrow/P2P Contracts](https://docs.zano.org/docs/use/escrow-contracts/), and an array of projects nurtured on Zano's foundation, our platform offers diverse opportunities for developers, traders, and all who value privacy in the digital age.
Zano also supports a [Marketplace API](https://docs.zano.org/docs/build/marketplace/marketplace-api-guide) for on-chain decentralized stores, [Escrow/P2P Contracts](https://docs.zano.org/docs/use/escrow-contracts/) for trustless peer-to-peer agreements, and human-readable [Aliases](https://docs.zano.org/docs/use/aliases) (@username instead of long addresses).
Zano is constantly innovating, so make sure to check our [roadmap](https://zano.org/roadmap) as well as our [Frequent Asked Questions](https://docs.zano.org/docs/learn/frequently-asked-questions) page.

### Stability
The extensive amount of testing that our blockchain has undergone minimizes the issues often encountered in the early days of any project. This makes the Zano network stable and release-ready from day 1. Our decade of experience with both Boolberry and Zano commences this.
The extensive amount of testing that our blockchain has undergone minimizes the issues often encountered in the early days of any project. This makes the Zano network stable and release-ready from day 1. Our decade of experience with both Boolberry and Zano confirms this.
### Decentralization
When we say decentralization we mean it, Zano is truly decentralized as anyone can participate in the network, and nobody has an unfair advantage. There are no validator nodes (master nodes), no minimum staking amounts, and no lock-up times. Whether you are a miner, a staker, or a user, **Zano is for everyone**.
### Fungibility
No coin is tainted. No blacklists. Hidden transaction history makes every ZANO identical. Unlike transparent blockchains where coins can be flagged or rejected based on their history, Zano's privacy guarantees mean every coin is equal.
### Uncensorable
When transactions are invisible, they can't be blocked, reversed, or selectively enforced. Privacy at the protocol level means no one can discriminate against specific transactions or addresses.
### Easy-to-Use
From our wide variety of wallets to our documentation and to our products, we always keep the end user in mind ensuring a good user experience to drive adoption of the Zano blockchain.

### Zano Trade: P2P Cryptocurrency Trading Platform
The Localbitcoins-like trading app will utilize Zano's built-in escrow contracts to eliminate the need for a third party in the trade settlement process. The escrow contract will require both parties to lock up collateral until the trade is concluded, thereby creating a financial incentive for both sides to cooperate. Any crypto, and even fiat, can be traded natively on this platform.
